The Call of the Wild was written by Jack London. It takes place during the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897. Buck a pampered dog, is taken from his loving home in California and thrown into the primitive Yukon Territory to become a sled dog. This journey takes him through many adventures during which tim he begins to hear a call...the call of the wild.
I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them, I shall use my time." – Jack London 1876-1916
Jack London lived an adventurous, but not always pleasant, life. With jobs such as oyster pirate, sailor, and gold prospector, London gained ideas for many of his novels. Even though he died at the age of forty, he was the most widely read author at the time of his death.
